Floodwaters cut the Esperance to Ravensthorpe highway, with the Oldfield and Young River crossings washed away. The Norseman highway was also cut off by the flood waters. Many of the surrounding creeks’ flood waters washed out roads.
The Esperance High School was officially opened 7th October by The Hon, E.H.M. Lewis.
The Castletown Primary School opened.

Cape Le Grand had been gazetted as a Class A reserve for National Park in 1948; it is now vested in the National Parks Board.
Twilight Cove road, previously a limestone track, was constructed between Dempster Head to Observatory Point.
