On 12th July, about 30 tonnes of the American space station, Skylab, fell locally. The San Francisco Examiner offered $10,000.00 for the first piece of the craft delivered in person. Stanley Thornton Jnr and his parents flew to San Francisco to collect the prize amid international media furore.
The Esperance Senior High School Band played for Prince Charles during his visit to the school.
