The first release of land at Salmon Gums was for the growing of cereal grain. Over 45,000 acres had been surveyed as conditional purchase leasehold, within easy reach of the railway line to Norseman and 10 to 15 miles of Esperance road.

This area around Salmon Gums, known as the ‘Mallee,’ was subdivided and allocated to settlers at generous terms.
