John Cook joined the Israelite Telegraph Station as a linesman after taking over from John Paul Brooks. He had previously worked for the Dempster Brothers.

He was married to Mary Sinclair and when they arrived at the telegraph station they had five children, seven more children were born at Israelite Bay. John Cook stayed at the Israelite Telegraph station until 1912 and become the senior linesman at the station.

The Cook family home at Israelite Bay was a limestone cottage, called Glencoe Cottage built by John Cook.
