Gibson Research Station progressed from a sub-station to a full research station in February 1955. The research station developed legumes such as clover and lupins which thrived in the sandy soil and provided nitrogen for extra fertility.
There was a strong demand for conditional purchase leasehold blocks from the eastern states, as there was a belief that the unproductive land could become a major agricultural region.
